Soul Birds

In traditional Scandinavian culture, the soul bird symbolises protection, health and happiness for the family and is hung in the home and allowed to move freely in the breeze.  They are often given as new home or new baby gifts.

They are made from a single block of locally sourced ash.  The wing shape is cut into the block and then each individual wing is sliced to approx 1mm thick.  The body of the bird is then carved and the wings splayed out into shape.
